The Spinhead Sessions are the rehearsal recordings for Sonic Youth's score to the Ken Friedman film Made In USA. Recorded at Spinhead Studio in North Hollywood, which was then hosting recordings of SST Records artists like Black Flag and Painted Willie. These jams were the rough gestural sketches that were built upon for a later soundtrack recording that was quite different. Thurston described the construction of "spindly, twisting rhythms and quiet rushes of noise and melody". Indeed, it seemed like a new light on interaction within the band, one where wordless interplay between Ranaldo, Moore, Gordon, and Shelley would itself be spotlit on future Peel Sessions and a number of the band's later SYR releases. Read the detailed description of the sessions by Brian Turner, Music Director of WFMU HERE.
